The English Skills Learning Center (ESL Center) strives to connect communities through language learning, integration, security and empowerment to adult refugees & immigrants in Salt Lake County. Our focus is to provide participants with the tools necessary to improve their quality of life in the United States and create a bridge out of poverty. The ESL Center provides specialized, FREE English & skill- based classes to adult language learners to help elevate their lives. Classes are taught by highly trained volunteers under the supervision of the ESL Center's professional staff and are held in locations that are convenient for students.
Volunteers are the vehicle through which our organization delivers our service and they are our most valuable asset. Our volunteers may work in any of our many ESL programs, and we could always use help with other projects as well. We provide volunteer trainings for all of our volunteers, which are held several times throughout the year. Our trainings teach new volunteers how to instruct and interact with adults from different cultures who have little or no English skills.
What a great victory and joy the past 21 months have been for me as an eslc volunteer english teacher. My heart is full of gratitude for the opportunity the eslc has provided me: to learn, to teach, to grow as a person and a teacher, and to build relationships with such wonderful people - both at the ESLC and with my students! I couldn't have asked for a better class. I have loved this experience and honored this work. I will always remember my time with the ESLC and the life changing and enhancing experience it has been...It was heartwarming to feel their love and feel that I've made a difference in their lives. They certainly have made a difference in mine. -Christine Petersen, Salt Lake City, Utah
