The Childrens Center, located in Salt Lake and Kearns, provides mental health care for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families. A clinical staff evaluates the needs of the family and they receive services on a sliding fee scale.
There are two volunteers assigned to a class of eight children. Volunteers usually attend one session a week but are encouraged to come as frequently as theyd like. They provide entertainment, play games, do arts and crafts, and read with the children of the preschool.
I first started just working in child care twice a week. It was so much fun to just play with the kids. Then I moved on to working in therapeutic preschool and I felt as if I had advanced in a level at the center. I work in a preschool class of ten boys with two teachers and it's always pretty intense, exciting and especially gratifying. - Janey Lyon, Salt Lake City, Utah

I knew from the day I started at the Children's Center I was going to love it for the entire year. Some days are harder than others but these challenges made serving at the Children's Center that much more rewarding. After my service, I was thrilled to be considered for a job as a therapeutic preschool teacher although I wasn't in a position to take it at the time, I know I created relationships that will help me possibly take the job in the future. If you really want to make a difference with teachers and children that really appreciate you and vocally tell you daily of their appreciation, volunteer at The Children's Center!!
