Utah's Youth and Families with Promise 4-H Mentoring Program (YFP) is a mentoring program designed for youth, ages 10-14, and their families. Young adult mentors establish caring relationships with the identified youth. This program allows youth to develop their interpersonal and academic skills by participating with them in structured recreation, community service, and youth groups. Youth involved in the program: meet 4 times each month with their mentor, 1 meeting sponsored by 4-H attend weekly after-school clubs attend monthly Family Night Out programs with their family.
Volunteer mentors provide stability and a caring relationship for assigned youth where they might not otherwise have a caring adult. As a volunteer, you will be asked to make a year commitment to mentor a youth and meet 4 times per month (usually once each week) with the mentored youth. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and have a vehicle or some form of transportation to get to the youth. Volunteers are formally interviewed and are required to complete a background check.
My mentee struggled with school and came from a disadvantaged situation. She is a rather extreme case for the program - but she constantly showed improvement. I felt lucky to be a part of her life. - Jessica Brothers, Provo, UT
