Comunidades Unidas is a local non profit that helps the immigrant community in the state of Utah. They have two initiatives. They the have the civic engagement initiative and the preventative health initiative. For the civic engagement inititative they offer leadership classes to the community, democratic schools, immigration workshops, etc. The preventative health initiative is focused on preventing health issues in our community. They run the "Ventanilla de Salud" (Health window) at the Mexican consulate where they provide free diagnostic testing to the community. They also help organize mobile clinics where free medical services are offered to the community. They also have a very strong women's health program where they try to get every women to get cervical cancer and breast cancer screenings at a very low cost or even free at times.
High school and college volunteers can help in many ways including advocating for preventive health and civic engagement, organizing workshops, administering information at community events, and educating the community about immigrant rights and preventive health.
I loved that i had direct interaction with my community. I was able to talk to them and learn from their experiences that they shared with me. I was really able to connect with all these people and create a connection. -Alejandra Palomino, Salt Lake City, Utah
