Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 pediatric hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico that provide specialized care for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. The local Salt Lake City hospital specializes in orthopedic conditions and spinal cord injuries. The purpose of all Shriners Hospitals is to provide care for children so they can lead fuller, more productive lives. All children, from birth to 18 years of age, may be eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals if, in the opinion of the doctors, the child can benefit from the specialized care provided by their hospitals. All services are provided at no charge. NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS.
Student volunteers are utilized in the following areas: Inpatient nursing, greeting patients at the front desk, bringing patients and families to and from the airport (over 21 years old), being a phone operator, and working in recreation therapy. Those students studying Child Life or Physical Therapy may apply to the Child Life or Physical Therapy program to intern. Other specialty areas include interpreters (Spanish) and pet therapists. Most volunteer slots are for two to four hours (per week), but a volunteer can select more than one slot.
This was one of the most incredible opportunities opened up to me. The most rewarding feeling I have experienced was witnessing a patient walk for the first time on a prosthesis we had been working for the last several weeks. The staff has taught me very well and has grown to trust me with more difficult tasks. I have loved having the ability to work alongside amazing doctors and get hands-on experience in the prosthetic and orthotic department. I have had more exposure to this field than many students, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity. I plan on continuing my volunteer work with the hospital, and it will be the service site I dedicate myself to for the next several years. -Isabell Vasquez-Echols, Salt Lake City, Utah
Student volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and be willing to volunteer a minimum total of 50 hours before resigning. All related costs for the above are covered by the hospital except for any needed immunizations or a chest x-ray.

Most of these positions are in time intervals of 3 hours, with vacant spots on different days. Students are required to commit to 50 hours with us. This can be completed throughout an extended period of time. For questions or inquiries, please call or email our Volunteer Coordinator, Torill Contos, at (801)-536-3711 or tcontos@shrinenet.org.
