Kids On The Move is a nonprofit organization that provides services and support to families with young children with special needs from birth to age twelve, mainly in Utah County but spreading statewide. Our programs are: Early Intervention, Early Head Start, Autism Center, Respite Care, and Childcare. Volunteers are a huge part of our ability to reach more families and provide high quality services!
There are four main ways that volunteers can help at Kids On The Move (KOTM). You can see what's currently available and sign up at www.kotm.org/volunteer-portal. Respite Care: Volunteers are paired one to one with a child with special needs (medical or behavioral) to play for an evening and let their parents have a little break from full-time care giving. Play may be reading books, shaping playdough, cooking up an imaginary meals, etc., based on the child's interests. Respite takes place at a KOTM building (Orem, Lehi, Springville, or St. George) on Friday and Saturday nights. A nurse or behavior specialist is there to oversee all of the volunteers and children, so volunteers are never alone or without support. Volunteers must be 16+ years old for Respite. Childcare: While parents are in classes to learn ways to help their special needs child or strengthen their family, volunteers provide childcare in a group setting. Childcare events are usually on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Volunteers must be 12+ years old (willing to make exceptions- email us with details). Special Events: Throughout the year we host special events or activities and need volunteers to help us pull it off. This includes an annual party for KOTM Alumni, a thank you event for community partners and donors, and The KOTM Run For Autism. Miscellaneous: Volunteers can help with light office work, cleaning the building or toys, yard work, and some limited classroom help in our preschool. Email volunteer@kotm.org to schedule a time. We are happy to make accommodations for families, as appropriate for their age range.
I really enjoyed getting to know the kids and having them remember me each time I came back. Also, in the step family class I loved hearing the troubles the kids were having and talking to them about them and helping them cope with their step family situations. -Dasha Trakhimets, Orem, Utah
