Utah's Youth and Families with Promise 4-H Mentoring Program (YFP) is a mentoring program designed for youth, ages 10-14, and their families. Young adult mentors establish caring relationships with the identified youth. This program allows youth to develop their interpersonal and academic skills by participating with them in structured recreation, community service, and youth groups. Youth involved in the program: meet 4 times each month with their mentor, 1 meeting sponsored by 4-H attend weekly after-school clubs attend monthly Family Night Out programs with their family.
Volunteer mentors provide stability and a caring relationship for assigned youth where they might not otherwise have a caring adult. As a volunteer, you will be asked to make a year commitment to mentor a youth and meet 4 times per month (usually once each week) with the mentored youth. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and have a vehicle or some form of transportation to get to the youth. Volunteers are formally interviewed and are required to complete a background check.
My mentee struggled with school and came from a disadvantaged situation. She is a rather extreme case for the program - but she constantly showed improvement. I felt lucky to be a part of her life. - Jessica Brothers, Provo, UT

The Iron County 4-H program is designed to support the positive and successful development of youth through the educational philosophy of "Learn by Doing". Volunteers and staff experience the joy of sharing hands on activities with youth at community activities or in our afterschool settings. At the same time the youth are learning life, decision making and social skills and just having a great time with an adult and friends. Our ultimate goal is for youth to develop positive personal assets needed to live successfully and responsibly in a diverse and changing world. Having the children learn through play and fun aids their remembering what was taught. 4-H programs can complement in and out of school learning and development.
Volunteers teach 4-H curriculum or a project of their choice to youth in the community or in our afterschool programs. Volunteers are trained in areas such as companion animals, arts and crafts, robotics, cooking, sewing, outdoor recreation and much more. Interested volunteers will require a background check before they can begin volunteering.
I have been in 4-H for 7 years. I have learned to be a better leader and collaborator. I have learned team working skills and develop relationships with other youth all over the state of Utah. 4-H has become a large part of my life. I teach Cloverbuds and help with fundraisers. I have been working on recruiting others to come to Teen Council and other events that we have. Calli Jordan 11th Grade I have been involved in 4-H for 6 years. In 4-H I am part of the Teen Council and also I am a Region Ambassador. In 4-H we have promoted healthy living and do leadership building activities that helps us to prepare for the future. 4-H has done a lot for me. It has helped me become a better leader and to be able to talk in front of people and to get over my fears. Also to help me prepare for job interviews and to show others what it means to be a leader. I have also helped with service projects. 4-H makes me want to be a better person and to excel in life. Before 4-H I never thought of going to college or wanting to do something bigger. I always thought it will just happens when it happens. 4-H has taught me to plan and that now is the time to prepare for the future. Daisey Allen 10th Grade

Mentoring taught me how a small influence, like one person being your friend, can dramatically enhance your attitude. Just keeping a positive attitude keeps those around you happy as well. It's important to think about what's best for yourself, but it can be much more fulfilling to find how to best serve another persons needs. - Jory Pepplaar, Glenwood, Utah

The volunteer program encompasses a variety of areas of service. Depending on your skills and interests, you can volunteer in acute care, emergency department, surgery, gift shope, radiology, physical therapy, laboratory, information desk or the Womens' Center. You must be 18 or older to volunteer. Ages 14-17 can apply for Junior Volunteer position.
I volunteered at the information desk. I helped people get around the hospital and delivered cards and flowers. I would occasionally push people in their wheelchairs up to their rooms. One time I watched a little girl because her mom was in a wheel chair and couldn't do it herself. I loved serving here because I was able to help in a small way but it made a huge impact. -Haylee Lanham, Sandy, Utah

The American Red Cross helps provide relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Youth Council is a YOUTH DIRECTED group of kids ages 14-20 years old that volunteer for the American Red Cross and further its mission. Youth Council meets once a month and discusses different perspectives and plans activities.
The committee participates in CPR, Disaster Preparedness, Basic Aid Training, and many other training classes. They hold annual events, such as Holiday Card Making for Veterans, Holiday Gift Event at the VA hospital, Human Rights Day Activity, and our Leadership Development Camp every summer. Along with giving youth countless opportunities to get involved with their community, the committee performs small service projects, holds discussions, and plans new and fun projects at every meeting.
My volunteer activities included meeting and talking with veterans, organizing bingo nights at the VA hospital as well as with families who are staying at the Fisher House, but it expands beyond that as well. I've helped with the pillowcase project and have taught kids how to cope with a disaster and what to do in a fire or an earthquake. I met a woman named Lafonda at the VA nursing home, and she told me she liked the fact that when I rolled her wheelchair, I didn't treat her or talk to her like she was going to die any second. She was cute. -Alyson Kyle, Salt Lake City, Utah

Arts Kids hosts in-school and out-of-school activities to help kids Find Their Happy Place - in a world that is often filled with frustration, disappointment, compliance and conformity, and a basic sense of not fitting in to established groups. We show kids How to Find Their Happy Place and remind them that if they don't feel like they currently fit in anywhere - we have a spot for them on the Arts Kids team. Arts Kids teaches kids life skills and coping strategies and then we host expressive and performing arts activities for kids - that focus on self-expression and self discovery.
Program volunteers assist the facilitator for each session and are supportive of each child during his or her life skills development introduction and the overall expressive art process of self expression and self-discovery. Arts Kids has volunteer opportunities for out-of-school programs during the school year, on weekends and during summer camps. Event volunteers have basic assignments for one of the many events hosted by Arts Kids facilitators and teachers.
Being a volunteer was not my label, but rather, just to be a friend; to be there for the kids. I was a role model in their lives. Art wasn't just the outcome it was about the expression. - Kaila Balch, Park City, Utah

Backyard Broadcast is a youth-driven movement dedicated to raising awareness and preventing the sexual exploitation of children in the United States. Volunteers will get equipped to be an abolitionist with leading level activist training. You spread the word with events such as hosting a dinner party with friends and screening a video on the issue. Volunteers can participate on or be a CHIEF who runs an official club at a local school. Volunteers in clubs will also participate in training law enforcement on the dangers of sex-trafficing.
The availability of this site will vary depending on the school you attend. If you want to volunteer with Backyard Broadcast check with your school to see if there is a club already established. If not, consider starting one.
Through Backyard Broadcast, I ran a station at my school and helped educate others about sex trafficking as we raised money for police officers to get the training they need to bust traffickers. Backyard Broadcast is currently working with the legislators to tighten laws on cases that involve minors engaged in commercial sex acts so that the victims of sex trafficking will not reoffend. I really enjoyed watching others realize how big of an issue sex trafficking is and helping them get involved with us as we were able to help the victims and future victims. -Allison Baxter, Salt Lake City, Utah

This youth mentoring program is available along the Wasatch Front, Park City, and St. George.
School-Based Mentoring- Mentors and children meet on school grounds (either at lunch or after school) for one-hour once a week while school is in session. Mentors are required to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters for a minimum of one full calendar year. We ask that you commit one year because we'd love to see you develop a partnership with your Little and have the opportunity for your relationship to develop. Activities include homework, board games and four square! As a mentor, you will get to know your Little and help him/her achieve by providing a good role model and supporting aspirations.
I can truly say I made a difference in the life of one little girl. You form a wonderful relationship with your little instead of it being a constant stream of people coming and going. Our mission at 5 Star Home Health & Hospice is to provide the highest quality care possible in the most professional and ethical manner. In Hospice, the whole family is considered the unit of care, and care extends through their period of mourning. Hospice services can be provided wherever a patient calls home: private residence, assisted living center, skilled nursing facility, etc. Services are typically related to managing the patient's terminal illness, controlling pain, or enabling the individual to maintain activities of daily living and basic functional skills.
Do you enjoy brightening someone's day? Being a compassionate listener and helping those who can't help themselves? Volunteering in Hospice is a rewarding way to give back to the community. The patients and caregivers are so grateful to those people who so selflessly serve. Here are a few things you may be asked to do as a volunteer in Hospice: Listen, life review, small household chores, be a friend, read out loud, respite care to family, etc.. the list goes on and on. *With as little as one hour a week, you could make a huge difference in someones life!
Being a Hospice volunteer has been an extremely rewarding experience. I've loved getting to know the family I am assisting. It has brought new understanding to my own life and much needed help for not only the dying patient, but also their family. -Justin Lamb, Salt Lake City

Bristol Hospice provides hospice services to meet the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of our patients at the end of life. We focus on an individualized plan of care which may include, as appropriate, the following services: nursing, physicians, hospice aides, spiritual support, therapy, dietary, counseling, volunteers, durable medical equipment, supplies, bereavement services and medications related to the terminal illness.
Volunteers provide companionship to patients who may be lonely. You may read out loud, listen to music, watch a movie, play games and puzzles, listen to fascinating life stories, deliver flowers, sing, play a musical instrument, utilize your second language abilities, simply chat with a patient or just sit and holding a hand. Volunteers must complete a drug screening and background check. Volunteers must be current on their TB immunization. Volunteers must have a current CPR card. Bristol Hospice makes this easy by covering the costs of the drug screening, background check, and CPR certification.

The Salt Lake County Children’s Justice Center is an exceptional program, contributing major advancements in the field of child abuse investigations. The program serves 3,700 people annually and provides critical assistance with investigations involving sexual abuse, physical abuse, child homicide, domestic violence related child abuse, abductions, and shaken baby syndrome. The centers are located in neighborhood settings, decorated like “grandma’s house” and designed to help children feel safe and comfortable during the interview process. Children visit the center for about one hour while investigators from law enforcement and child protective services meet with the child and their parents to obtain statements and provide support. Crisis intervention, advocacy, and referral services are provided to help the family cope with the aftermath of abuse. Through the coordination services of the Children’s Justice Center, involved agencies work together to promote the “best interests of the child” in prosecution and protection proceedings.
College students can gain college credits for volunteering at the CJC program by providing support services to our clients. Students will learn about child abuse investigations as well as how the criminal justice process works. Interested students must complete a formal application, pass a screening process, and must pass a mandatory criminal and child abuse background check.

We approach this by combining best practices in several disciplines including community organizing, case management, grassroots leadership, S.M.A.R.T. goal setting, financial literacy, mentoring, peer-to-peer counseling and learning, and child/ youth development. With the assistance of our dedicated volunteers and community members, we can provide resources to our families which include job opportunities, transportation, healthcare, and a variety of other services. When our communities and families come together with support and resources, poverty can be resolved for good. UPDATE 8/28/2020 - WE CAN USE VOLUNTEERS BOTH IN PERSON AND VIRTUAL.
Our youth volunteers can assist families in poverty by attending Circles weekly meetings on Thursday nights from 5:45-7:45 PM. Prior to their first meeting, all new volunteers must attend training with Circles Staff. Volunteers at weekly meetings serve as positive role models and supports to other volunteers for the age group they are matched with. They also have a very strong women's health program where they try to get every women to get cervical cancer and breast cancer screenings at a very low cost or even free at times.
High school and college volunteers can help in many ways including advocating for preventive health and civic engagement, organizing workshops, administering information at community events, and educating the community about immigrant rights and preventive health.

Connect2Health (C2H) is a University of Utah student driven volunteer program working to meet the social needs of under-served patients in community clinics and hospital units. Connect2Health Volunteers, known as Health Mentors, use a database to create ‘Resource Prescriptions’ for patients. Patients can use their Resource Rx to access community organizations providing needed services. Connect2Health’s Mission is to empower individuals to utilize community resources in order to cultivate multidimensional health. For some patients, a simple Resource Rx is all the empowerment needed. For others, Connect2Health Volunteers will help mentor patients through the resource landscape.
As a General Volunteer, you will commit to two consecutive semesters (Spring-Summer, Summer-Fall, or Fall-Spring). You will serve a consistent weekly shift of 3-4 hours in a clinical environment. Here you will talk with patients and families one-on-one to assess their needs and priorities. Then, using a database you will create a ‘Resource Prescription’ for each patient to help them gain access to community resources that provide basic things like food, clothing, and transportation. You will also be expected to attend a one hour Reflection Session every other week. If you are an AmeriCorps Member, your duties will be the same, but you will commit to 300 hours in 12 months, and you will serve approximately 6 hours in clinic each week, plus a weekly Reflection Session.
This has honestly been one of the most impactful things I have ever been able to do. I love the whole concept of the program. We go and meet with individuals with complex needs and ask them on how we can help. We then go back and figure how to meet those needs with the resources that we have. In my mind, it is a perfect civic engagement model for addressing complex social issues. We are not studying theory or previous models of alleviating homelessness, but creating together with our patients a working relationship that is changing peoples’ lives. – Derek Woodruff

So many smiles, so may giggles as riders, horses and volunteer teams join together each week to just make the world a little better place for us all. From horse tacking to side walking, Courage Reins volunteers are the heart of our barn.

We have many people from all over the world come to our center to learn English. Days for Girls is a non-profit organization that helps girls stay in school and retain dignity, giving back important days of their lives. Most girls in developing countries miss school during their periods; many eventually drop out. We can do something about that by empowering girls, women, and communities with access to sustainable feminine hygiene, as well as sanitation and health training. VOLUNTEERS CAN SET UP APPOINTMENTS BY EMAIL TO MEET ONE OF US AT THE WORKROOM TO PICK UP DIY MATERIALS TO PROCESS AT HOME. WE'RE NOT HOSTING ANYONE IN PERSON AT OUR WORKROOM. VOLUNTEERS CAN JUST EMAIL US OF THEIR DESIRE TO WORK WITH US AND WE'LL SEND THEM THE APPOINTMENT LINKS.
We make lovely, high-quality feminine hygiene kits. Each kit has 11 components that need to be sewn together, however we have the process broken down into many small steps, so that volunteers can help even without previous sewing skills. We need hands to help launder and prepare fabric, cut out pieces, sew components, iron pieces, assemble kits and many more options.

ELC's program involves six levels of English ranging from Beginning to Advanced. ELC also offers U.S. Citizenship Preparation, and Workplace Literacy. Students learn at a level-appropriate pace and are given lots of opportunities to practice their reading, writing, grammar, and even conversation. Students also learn valuable life skills in an English-speaking community, such as banking, shopping, finding jobs and using healthcare.
ELC students learn more efficiently and effectively when they receive one-on-one attention and assistance - volunteers help to provide that opportunity to as many students as possible. Volunteers mostly work as student tutors and teacher aides. All volunteers are given training and are directly supervised by an instructor.

The ESL Center provides specialized, FREE English & skill- based classes to adult language learners to help elevate their lives. Classes are taught by highly trained volunteers under the supervision of the ESL Center's professional staff and are held in locations that are convenient for students.
Volunteers are the vehicle through which our organization delivers our service and they are our most valuable asset. Our volunteers may work in any of our many ESL programs, and we could always use help with other projects as well. We provide volunteer trainings for all of our volunteers, which are held several times throughout the year. Our trainings teach new volunteers how to instruct and interact with adults from different cultures who have little or no English skills.
What a great victory and joy the past 21 months have been for me as an eslc volunteer english teacher. The nursery is most often used for respite reasons (a break). This includes a parent or guardian needing to attend a therapy appointment, support group, court hearing, doctor appointment, or a job certification class or interview--or just feeling stressed and needing a break. Once the children enter the nursery, we want them to feel safe and simply play and be a kid. As a volunteer, your main responsibility is spending one-on-one time with the children. Every family needs a place to call home. A place where they can dream, grow and become part of their community. But for many families, no matter how hard they work and try, having a home of their own will always be out of reach. Habitat for Humanity partners with the community to provide affordable housing with no-profit, zero-percent interest mortgages to partner families.
Volunteers at the ReStore receive and process donations of furniture, appliances, and lighting from donors and help the ReStore sell these products for Habitat programs. Organizing, constructing, deconstructing, testing, merchandising, marketing, cleaning, and helping customers every day (Tuesday-Saturday)!!
I enjoyed working with people and realizing that you don't need to have the nicest of everything to be happy. -Fischer Olpin, Park City, Utah

The IRC provides opportunities for refugees to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many have survived for years against incredible odds. They step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope and determination. In Salt Lake City and many other regional offices across the country, the IRC helps them rebuild their lives.
IRCs Youth Program runs on Tuesdays (ages 8-2) from 4-6pm. Volunteers start out by mentoring refugee youth in this program together with other volunteers with a group of 2 refugee children from all over the world. The schedule and activities are flexible. The purpose of this program is to help youth discover what they love to do, build confidence and provide the support they need. Volunteers under 18 must have parent sign a release. A 10 week commitment is required, as well as a one hour general orientation and youth specific orientation.
The after school program is awesome. I learned so much as a volunteer. The refugee youth probably teach me more than I teach them. Their families are so welcoming; the treat me like family and I was able to learn about their culture. - Ruthie Arevalo, Salt Lake City, UT

Kids On The Move is a nonprofit organization that provides services and support to families with young children with special needs from birth to age twelve, mainly in Utah County but spreading statewide. Our programs are: Early Intervention, Early Head Start, Autism Center, Respite Care, and Childcare. Volunteers are a huge part of our ability to reach more families and provide high quality services!
There are four main ways that volunteers can help at Kids On The Move (KOTM). You can see what's currently available and sign up at www.kotm.org/volunteer-portal. Respite Care: Volunteers are paired one to one with a child with special needs (medical or behavioral) to play for an evening and let their parents have a little break from full-time care giving. Play may be reading books, shaping playdough, cooking up an imaginary meals, etc., based on the child's interests. Respite takes place at a KOTM building (Orem, Lehi, Springville, or St. George) on Friday and Saturday nights. A nurse or behavior specialist is there to oversee all of the volunteers and children, so volunteers are never alone or without support. Volunteers must be 16+ years old for Respite. Childcare: While parents are in classes to learn ways to help their special needs child or strengthen their family, volunteers provide childcare in a group setting. Childcare events are usually on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Volunteers must be 12+ years old (willing to make exceptions- email us with details). Special Events: Throughout the year we host special events or activities and need volunteers to help us pull it off. This includes an annual party for KOTM Alumni, a thank you event for community partners and donors, and The KOTM Run For Autism. Miscellaneous: Volunteers can help with light office work, cleaning the building or toys, yard work, and some limited classroom help in our preschool. Email volunteer@kotm.org to schedule a time. We are happy to make accommodations for families, as appropriate for their age range.

To us, Maji (mah-jee) is something you do and the way you live. The Maji Family inspires mini daily acts of kindness and service projects in local communities. Each month, with the help of Youth Ambassadors, we plan a project to meet a need we have recognized in the communities we are a part of. In addition, with a portion of funds raised and donated, we send supplies such as wheel chairs and water tanks to the developing country of Fiji.
Each month we need the help of volunteers to carry out different service projects that we do! They will help with a variety of tasks depending on the project for that month. It could be filling Easter eggs for Primary Children’s Hospital, like we did in April, or it could be cutting and tying blankets for The Road Home, as we did in August. We also work with other organizations, who reach out to us when they are in need of volunteers to do anything from serving snow cones at a Somali refugee party to accompanying refugee children on a Lagoon day trip. For even more opportunities service and leadership, volunteers can sign up on our website to become one of our Youth Ambassadors, who help plan, organize, and lead service projects.
My experience with Maji has been incredible. Not only is Maji working for the greater good on a global scale, but we're also concerned and involved with local matters. I've had the opportunity to meet the most selfless people that are in search of making the world "Altogether United". - Blair Bowen, Salt Lake City, UT

WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS. WE HAVE SOME PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE HAD TO PUT ON HOLD DUE TO COVID-19 BUT WE STILL HAVE A FEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES. AS FOR NEW PROCEDURES, WE ARE TAKING EVERYONE'S TEMPERATURE AT THE DOOR AND NOT LETTING ANYONE IN THE CLINIC WHO HAS ANY SYMPTOMS. WE ARE ALSO REQUIRING MASKS FOR EVERYONE.
The duties of a volunteer will depend on their skills. We have opportunities to assist medical providers, help with resources, Spanish interpreting, patient assistance program, clerical and healthy living education.
I really liked serving at the Maliheh Free Clinic because I felt like I was helping the community because they provide health care to people who wouldn't be able to be treated otherwise. HAVE NO PROJECTS FOR VOLUNTEERS CURRENTLY. My Story Matters, a 501c3 charity organization, promotes healing, inspires hope, and celebrates courage in everyday heroes by engaging them in a process that helps them reflect, recount, record, and reframe their stories. Our vision is to engage communities in embracing stories of all individuals as heroes of their own personal journey and, in that process, become more united in compassion, understanding, and empathy as we realize every story really does matter!
Volunteers work one on one with individuals to gather information from their lives to create a custom storybook all about the child's life. These volunteers must communicate clearly, write legibly, and build a positive relationship with those they work with. These situations are often filled with difficult and sensitive memories. Volunteers help put families at ease through this process.

Some of the programs offered are skiing and snowboarding, aquatics, horseback riding, archery, cycling, and paddle sports.
At the National Ability Center I taught swim and ski lessons to children and people with cognitive disabilities. Most of the volunteer work I did was very hands on. I would have to hold some of the children in the water to support them while swimming and I would also help them perform certain strokes. NOT ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS UNDER AGE 18 - allowing adult group volunteering for outdoor projects, like yard cleanup, trail management, and possibly other things in the future. Friends of Animals Utah (“FOAU”) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has found homes for over 12,000 pets. Our retail adoption center is called “Furburbia” and is located in the Tanger Outlet Mall in Park City, Utah. Each week, FOAU’s staff visits animal shelters throughout Utah and rescues healthy adoptable dogs and cats, many from these shelters’ euthanasia lists. FOAU then spays/neuters, chips, and vaccinates these animals. These rescue animals are then transported daily from the FOAU Rescue & Rehabilitation Ranch facility to Furburbia. At the Ranch, we provide a temporary, loving home for dogs and cats that no longer have a family of their own.
Volunteers are an integral part of the day-to-day operations at Friends of Animals Utah. We couldn’t exist without the help of our dedicated and hard working volunteers! There are many ways and places to volunteer so contact us with the info above to discuss what you can do!
I started volunteering at Furburbia three years ago. I had always loved animals and was new to Park City and looking to get out of my house and meet some new people (and dogs!). Three years, hundreds of shifts, dozens of friendships, one adopted pit bull, and countless dogs walked and cats petted, and I can honestly say volunteering with FOAU was one of the best decisions of my life. The people, staff and volunteers alike, are absolutely wonderful and want nothing more than to help find forever homes for the dogs and cats that come through every year. If you’re thinking about volunteering, I cannot recommend it enough. Come walk a dog, fold some laundry, socialize a timid cat, clean a kennel, hug a puppy. Friends of Animals needs you, and even though you may not realize it yet, you may just need Friends of Animals Utah. - Lauren Cooley, Park City, Utah

If I were to be asked the biggest positive change in our school this year, I would respond by saying Playworks. Students who were formerly causing trouble have turned into leaders. The faculty has been able to concentrate more on the curriculum rather than fixing the issues. The classrooms have become more peaceful and a safer learning environment. - Sally Sansom Principal, East Midvale Elementary

The afterschool program at Granite Park Junior High seeks to provide a safe and enjoyable environment where teens can improve their grades and participate in new activities. Granite Park has a student population of just under 600 students (roughly 90% qualify for free and/or reduced lunch) representing 65 countries and 41 spoken languages. Students in this program partake in one hour of homework help, one hour of an enrichment activity, and are offered free dinner each day. As part of this program, some students take part in our reading clinic where they work one on one with a volunteer tutor two times a week to improve literacy.
Volunteers with the reading clinic at Granite Park will be working one on one with students two days a week to help them improve literacy through the implementation of a tested curriculum. They will receive on site training as to how this curriculum works. Volunteers will work with our Reading Clinic Coordinator to help plan lessons, ensure students are making progress, build positive relationships with students, and provide positive feedback to students to ensure they develop a love of reading. Most of the students in this program are reading 3-5 grades below their desired level, and this program has proven very influential in helping them achieve growth.

At the Provo City Library, local community members can get a library card and check out all kind of books. There are also free and paid events to attend, from a Fairy Tea Party to great author guest speakers.
There are many tasks for volunteers to attend to. Some examples are, preparing for a special event (sometimes even dressing up for the event) and running an activity. Other activities involve organizing books, cleaning, or helping the patrons and attending to their needs. Doing crafts and reading to kids happens on a few days during each week, which volunteers can often help with, and help prepare for.
I loved working at the Provo Library, and learned so much from my experience! I felt that working at a library gave me a different experience than other service sites would have. I learned how a library works, and helped educate children and show them that reading and learning can be fun, and isn't always school work.- Mia Felin, Orem, Utah

Throughout my time at Real Life, I loved creating bonds with the teens that attended my site. The mission of Aging Services is to foster independence for Salt Lake County's older generations by providing a system of services that promotes overall independence. They provide assistance to the existing support network for the elderly population - family, friends, neighbors and other volunteers, churches and other community organizations. As the gap between available resources and the needs of seniors continues to grow, Aging Services believes the role of the volunteer is critically important. Salt Lake Peer Court is a program of Utah Law Related Education, a 501(c)(3) organization. Salt Lake Peer Court is a court diversion program certified by the Utah Youth Court Association under the Utah Youth Court Diversion Act. Youth who have committed status offenses or class B or class C misdemeanors can be referred to Peer Court rather than sent through the traditional juvenile court system. Salt Lake Peer Court is a free and voluntary program. Youth who are successful in Peer Court do not receive a criminal record. APPLICATIONS FILLED, NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS. EMAIL TO BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST.
A youth referred to Salt Lake Peer Court (along with a parent/guardian) sits before a panel of high school volunteers who are trained to hear cases. The panel asks questions of the youth and parent/guardian to get a better understanding of the offense/issue as well as other concerns within the household and at school. The panel creates a disposition contract with conditions the youth and parent/guardian must fulfill. These conditions can include community service for the youth, educational opportunities, vocational training, social activities, individual/family counseling, and/or other conditions as the panel sees fit. The referred youth is paired with a peer mentor who follows-up with them by phone or in person between court hearings. An adult advisor is assigned to the case and follows-up with the parent/guardian to check on progress and answer questions. Return hearings are held to report on disposition contract progress and make changes if needed. Referred youth who are successful in Peer Court graduate. Those who are unsuccessful are closed non-compliant and the referral is sent back to the source (usually the school) for further processing.
"I personally enjoyed watching the youth work towards graduating the program. Many troubled youth were able to make small changes in their lives that allowed them to reconnect with themselves, their family, and their community." // "I got to help the community and have an impact on my peers!" // "The best part about Peer Court was watching my mentees graduate. Both of them graduated at the last day of Peer Court, so it was nice to see our efforts come to fruition in the end."

Sandy Youth Court offers an alternative approach to juvenile justice in which youth referred for minor offenses, are sentenced by a jury of their peers. Youth Court employs a restorative justice-based approach that applies the skills and abilities of Sandy City youth to provide a positive peer influence, to hold youth accountable for their actions, and to strengthen their ties to school and community. Youth Court is an alternative to Juvenile Court for many first-time offenders. The program has three main components: 1) court hearings 2) peer mentoring and 3) community connection.
We mentor kids, who commit their first offense, get on the right track to give them a second chance. This is done by teaching them in the choices class, assisting them in community service at non-profit organizations in the community, tutoring, weekly mentor meetings and holding a mission of restorative justice. Sandy Youth Court has individualized dispositions for each kid depending on their hearing before a panel of their peers. Volunteers can contact Barbara Higgins about the application process. We generally accept applications in the Spring. However, if there are openings, exceptions could be made. Youth Court is held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 5:30-8:30pm at the Sandy Justice Center. Volunteers must be able to attend court at these times. There is also a mandatory two day summer training held each year (make-up training is available upon approval). Volunteers will sit on the jury, fulfill various roles in the courtroom, and act as mentors to the youth coming through the program.
I most valued being able to watch my mentees grow. I was truly changing their lives and helping them. Typically youth take the easy way by electing to go through the juvenile justice system. With that being said, I appreciated the opportunity I had to assist them in becoming better people. -Brianna Bernstein, Sandy, Utah

St. Anne's Center was established in 1981 by a coalition of churches to help meet the basic food, clothing and shelter needs of the poor, the transient and the needy. We help those who through no fault of their own, are unable to provide for themselves. St. Annes Center acts in collaboration with the community to assist people in moving from alienation and poverty to self-sufficiency and inclusion.
St. Annes Center is always open. We need volunteers who are willing to serve 3-4 hours shifts on a regular basis. You could answer phones, greet clients and visitors, receive donations or answer questions. You could also assist in game nights, movie nights, parenting classes and financial management classes. In addition, you could sort donations, prepare hygiene kits, enter data, and prepare thank you notes to send to donors. We also look for groups that would like to adopt one day each month and help prepare and serve lunch, or help with special cleanup projects, painting, or adopting family rooms and fixing them up.
I began to value hard work the most. I was working hard to donate bags upon bags of donations and I got to watch the residents work hard and eventually be rewarded with a job or a new house or car. That was the most satisfying part, especially if it was one of the resident families who got to move out to their own apartment or house. It helped me realize that with hard work, anything can happen. - Olivia Andrus, Ogden, Utah

Tennis and Tutoring is an afterschool program dedicated to nurturing students hearts, muscles, and minds. Our program is provided completely free to our participants and has been doing work in Salt Lake City since 2008. We currently have commitments at three school sites this coming year and are hoping to add a fourth very soon. Each site will require the support of a minimum of 5 volunteer tutors who will be grouped with a small group of 2-3 students to help in the classroom. Tutors who can assist on the court will support our tennis pro working with groups on court, 12 students at a time. Here are the sites we are currently recruiting volunteers for: 1. Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City. Twenty-four sudents are bussed to and from nearby Lincoln Elementary School. The students are grades 1 through 6. The program runs afterschool 2 days per week from 3:00pm to 5pm. Tutors work with our Classroom Instructor to deliver an art enrichment and leadership development curriculum. Lincoln Elem. is a Title 1 school and a very low-income area. 2. Hillside Elementary School, West Valley City. We will work at Hillside Elementary from 4-6 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays starting the week of September 12. This school is not Title I but has many students who do qualify for free or reduced lunch and who will benefit greatly from having a safe, encouraging, healthy place to spend their afterschool hours. Volunteers at this site who attend Granger, Cyprus, Kearns, or Hunter High schools may be able to apply for a small scholarship at the end of their service at this location. 3. West Valley Elementary School, West Valley City. This program site will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm beginning the week of September 12. Classroom volunteer tutors work with our Classroom Instructor to implement our creative, fun, and educational curriculum. In the classroom, we work with the principals at each site to ensure that our academic support ties directly to the student's needs, so each site may have different focuses during the "tutoring" part of their afterschool time. On the court (or in the school gym or playground), we use the USTA's 10 and Under Tennis methodology to help even the youngest beginners get started in the game.

ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO GO TO THE EVENTS AND NOT INSIDE THE BUILDING. The Family Place is a local non-profit dedicated to protecting children and strengthening families. This is done through providing a variety of services, most at no cost. We offer counseling, parenting classes, stepfamily classes, kids classes, and we host family-friendly events like our popular Princess Party. We also have the Kid's Place, which is a crisis/respite nursery where parents can bring their children (11 and younger) to come play in a safe environment in times of emergency or for scheduled weekly care. We have a 24-7 crisis line, and the Kid's Place is available night or day in the event of an emergency. Additionally, we are the local child abuse shelter. Through these services and more, we accomplish our mission of building stronger families.
There are many volunteer opportunities at The Family Place, and it all depends on what you would like to do! Everything from hosting a drive for items on our wish list to making crafts for kids to do at one of our events, there is always something to do. Other common volunteer opportunities include: making file folder games for kids, making blankets for kids, and cleaning the building. The possibilities are endless--contact us today to talk about different options! Some projects are completed at our building, but others can be done from home or with a group. I value this experience of volunteering there because I got to learn about different life laws from them. In the building there is a group of Elderly Women and they are a spunky crew. These ladies have taught me to always help someone out, because chances are they have it worse than you. This group always has each others back, they are always trying to help each other grow and "Get the best out of the life we have left". Not only have those residents inspired me, but others have too. Each resident has a different story, some of their stories are rocky and others are smooth. But yet each of them puts on a smile and just takes one step at a time really and truly enjoys the time they have left. Its inspiring to see them continue on after such hard lives. It has inspired me to live in the moment and to serve because you want to, not because you have to. -Samantha Turpin, Ogden, Utah

"When I volunteered, I walked through and showed the homeless what they could take. I learned their is a lot more people in need then I ever realized. I am more grateful for what I own." -Kaleb CJ Gurr, Odgen, Utah

They have the chance to enjoy this special time in their life with a big Seville Family.
Volunteers of all ages assist in activities such as bean bag baseball, bowling, bingo dances, entertainment and themed parties.
I really enjoyed my site because I was able to learn a lot from the Seniors. They were all so wise and had great words of advice for me. I loved listening to their stories and they had such interesting lives. I really enjoyed it because my 98 year old great-grandmother lived here so I got to spend a lot of much needed time with her. - McKenna Petty, Orem, Utah

ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS - MASKS REQUIRED (last updated 9/10/20). The Sharing Place offers grief support for children, teens and their parent(s) or caregiver(s) following the death of a loved one. Trained support group volunteers assist a grief specialist in groups for family members as they adjust to life without their loved one.
1. Twice a year, January and August, they offer training for individuals 19 and older who would like to volunteer in a support group. Training is 9 hours. Groups meet twice a month for 3 hours each time. We ask for a 10 month commitment. All volunteers who work within a group must complete our training. 2. Students who want to be a house volunteer do not have a minimum age requirement. 3. We also offer individuals volunteer opportunities to learn about all the needs of keeping a non profit operating. Individuals may schedule times to work at our site in a variety of ways - office work, housekeeping, preparation for groups, grounds upkeep, assist with fundraising, sort and organize donations, etc. These volunteers are critical to our organization as they help keep our costs down, and equally important, they learn about overall operations of a non-profit.
Within one day of volunteering there, it was like I was already part of their family. I can only imagine what it feels like to actually attend one of their counseling sessions, because they do such a great job taking care of their volunteers. - Katie Houser, Salt Lake City, Utah

The Treehouse Children's Museum serves children and families by providing interactive, hands-on exhibits and programs focusing on family literacy, children's literature, the arts, and the humanities. Its interactive exhibits and programs promote the development and practice of vital emerging literacy and reading skills.
The Treehouse Children's Museum volunteers work as exhibit guides, assist with programs and special events, and complete group literacy projects. Volunteers are also needed to read stories with children. They also spend time interacting and assisting families as they explore the museum's exhibits. In addition, Treehouse volunteers help to prepare for museum activities and assist at community outreach events. Volunteers can even act as costumed storybook characters during special events. Volunteer opportunities are available for youth and adults 16 years and up. Youth ages 12 to 15 are invited to apply for the summertime special volunteer program (applications available in March).

ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS FOR VIRTUAL MENTORING WITH POSSIBILITIES OF THEM TURNING TO IN PERSON OR A HYBRID - The Village Project is seeking mentors for youth involved in the Utah Juvenile Court system. The mentors must be at least 21 years of age, pass a background check (which the program completes), have a valid driver’s license & automobile insurance, and be willing to make a six month commitment.
The Village Projects asks volunteers to commit to a minimum of one hour each week that is spent one on one with an assigned youth.
Mentoring youth in the community is a lot of fun and there's so many positive effects that come with it. One of the great things we can do is work with their family and the courts to provide opportunities to them that they'd never have otherwise. It’s pretty amazing to see the changes that happen. Developing self-esteem and confidence, understanding emotions better, improving communication skills and more happen just by spending some time one-on-one with them every week. And sometimes the kids learn something, too! It quickly goes from “volunteer project” to “hanging out with an awesome friend” when they see that you care. There’s nothing else like it.~ Steve D. I chose to be a volunteer because I want to give back what was given to me. Someone believed that I could change my life around, and believed in me. I want to give that back to someone else! ~ McKenzie M. The Village Project is an incredible and important organization dedicated to the welfare of our youth. I am proud and honored to be a new mentor for "The Village Project". I am passionate about the welfare of our youth. These youth deserve the opportunity of a powerful mentoring program of individuals insisting on making a positive impact and a difference in the lives of these young people. My experiences in life as a single mother have given me a true insight into the reality of "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child". "The Village Project" is my dedication and opportunity to positively impact these important lives and give back. ~ Christina K.

Volunteers assist the Recreation Department in serving the 81 elderly veterans that live at the Salt Lake Veterans Nursing Home. Volunteers are a vital part of our recreation program. Without them, we would not be able to have the high caliber activities that we currently have. Activities require a lot of one-on-one attention that 1 staff member can not adequately provide. Volunteers decrease the ratio gap and ensure that not only are more residents getting to come to and on activities, but they are also able to fully engage in the activities because they have a volunteer who can assist them. Having more assistance from volunteers means that the activities can be more involved and the residents will get more out of it. Volunteers are also vital in creating friendships and connections with our residents UPDATE 8/28/2020 - NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING VOLUNTEERS.

If you are unable to come in on your shift, un-sign up for your shift at least 2 hours before your shift starts on Track It Forward 5. Complete the needed paperwork & training in a timely manner. Paperwork includes: Orientation Training Dementia Training The Avalon Volunteer Application Background Check The volunteer’s appearance and conduct while at our nursing home must be appropriate and respectful to both staff and residents Volunteers should not be taking pictures of the residents on their cell phones The safety and privacy of the Residents is considered first priority. Any private information about the resident and his/her health or private information should not be shared with any other individuals, within or outside the home.
I started with the William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home to fulfill community service hours for a class last semester. While the class got me started here, I keep coming back because of how genuinely happy it makes me. The residents' spunk, humor and insight encourage me daily to be my best self, not just when I'm volunteering but in all facets of my life: when I'm at work to treat patients with dignity and respect, to have discipline and persistence in doing schoolwork, to be attentive, patient and time-conscious in my personal relationships. Not only are the residents great, but they're supported by caring staff that know how to have fun, and go above and beyond for them and their volunteers! But the staff can't do it all by themselves. Volunteers like you are needed! And you might not know it yet... but you need the residents! The wide array of hours to accommodate and various activities make volunteering flexible and fun. -Mili Langi

Utah Youth Village is looking for volunteers to mentor youth in the Salt Lake City area. Each volunteer commits to meet with their assigned youth for at least one hour each week for six months, although you can mentor longer. As a mentor, you will help empower youth in the community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential. This is a fun and meaningful way to gain experience and service hours. It also looks great on resumes!
You will be provided with orientation training, in-service training, and ongoing training and support. Volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check, paid by Utah Youth Village. Mentors will be required to attend an 8 hour pre-service training and a monthly meeting with Anilu Gamez, the Mentor Supervisor. Utah Youth Village will provide paid mileage and a spending allowance to be used during activities with the youth.

The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. For more than 100 years the YWCA Utah has been a voice for women, a force for change, and a place for hope in Utah.
Volunteers who undergo an extensive background check, orientation, and 25-hour training education work directly with people who are living in crisis because of domestic violence. Volunteers may also work in the shelter, help at fundraising events, assist in the child care center, help residents shop for clothing in the boutique, or sort donations.
The second day I showed up the kids remembered my name. After that, we played like we had all known each other for years. It was awesome! - Mustafa Hussain, Salt Lake City, Utah
