The mission of Latinos in Action (LIA) is to empower our Latino youth through culture, service, leadership and excellent education with the sole purpose of graduating from college. Our vision is for each individual to reach higher active achievement within their family and community through excellent higher education. A college diploma on the wall of every Latino home. LIA consists of a leadership class taught at the high school and junior high by an institutional agent. This class trains students as paraprofessionals who visit and tutor local elementary school children. LIA students also learn and improve their leadership skills through their roles within LIA. LIA students organize activities and initiate service projects together.
LIA needs help with various service projects throughout the year, but especially during March when we host 3 separate day long conferences for the students involved in our program. We will need extra hands for everything from registration of students, planning, prepping materials and help the day of. We will need help at our office in Salt Lake City. In addition, we could use help at our conferences at Southern Utah University (March 6), Weber State University (March 13), and Utah Valley University (March 11).
I tutored 4th graders at Midvalley Elementary with Latino's in Action. I was able to go 2-3 times a week during the school day so I actually got to tutor the kids during their actual class. It was very rewarding helping the students with reading or math. - Maria, Cedar Hills, UT
