Real Life is an after-school tutoring and life skills mentoring program that partners Youthlinc with 12 sites in Salt Lake to provide mentoring, tutoring, and hands-on activities to refugee and immigrant youth. Real Life strives toward providing this demographic with fun, educational and applicable life lessons and activities that will help them become successful in their adult life while also providing Youthlinc participants with leadership opportunities and awareness of the international needs in their own community.
If you would like to volunteer with Real Life you can expect to participate in some fun activities, teach lessons, gain leadership experience through the planning and implementing of curriculum, and have the opportunity to share your interests and talents.
Throughout my time at Real Life, I loved creating bonds with the teens that attended my site. I helped the teens with any questions they had on homework, as well as helped to plan and carry out lessons on things like nutrition, time management, or banking. It was so awesome to see the teens light up when they understood something on their homework that I had been helping them with for weeks. - Alice Barnett, Salt Lake City, Utah

Real Life was an incredible experience. It allowed me to work alongside other Youthlinc peers and it was facilitated by Youthlinc leaders. I also got to know people of Salt Lake that would have been strangers to me without this program. Pretty soon I was recognizing kids from Real Life at my own school, "see you at Youthlinc, Saleh!" I'd say in the hallway and just like that my day was made. Going there after school was just a part of my routine and I actually wanted to go one Fridays. By the end of the year I had logged more than 80 hours with out really realizing it. Real Life rocks! I advice anyone living in Salt Lake to participate in it.

Real Life was an awesome experience. I loved getting to know the teens that came, and I came to find out they are just like regular teens. I became good friends with many of them. While other volunteer opportunities may seem tedious at times, my time at Real Life was over too fast, and I had tons of fun. The best is when we would have dance parties, and they could dance way better than I ever wish I could. They definitely showed me a thing or two. Volunteer with Real Life! It's the best :)

Real Life was a great experience! I loved being able to have a hands on impact on the lives of individuals my own age. Teaching lessons helped me become more prepared and better at communicating. Plus, I was able to make huge impacts on those that I taught. We learned about everything - from peer pressure to financial habits, to smoking. I highly recommend volunteering with Real Life!

Real Life was such a great place to volunteer, the program offers great leadership opportunities and amazing experiences that prepare you for other tasks you will be given through Youthlinc and in all is just an extremely fun way to volunteer. The students you work with are some of the funniest and most interesting people you can meet, I still tell stories of my time volunteering there. If you want an amazing place to volunteer with plenty of learning and teaching opportunities and that keeps smile on your face then I would highly recommend volunteering at such an incredible organization.

Real Life was an exceptional opportunity for leadership and volunteer experiences. Teaching/helping the Real Life kids gives you an interactive experience that is unique and effective. Real Life gave me the confidence to be more active in my service endeavors and to have a passion for who I'm serving.

I have been involved with Real Life for three years. I first came into this program not really knowing what to expect, but left with invaluable, life-changing experience and insight. I was virtually unaware of the refugee community in Salt Lake and how much they truly deserve the help that Real Life provides. Having the opportunity to work one on one with youth in South Salt Lake gives volunteers to truly make a difference in their community. To you it may just be simply showing up every day, but to them you are a friend and a potential key to changing their lives. Real Life is an incredible organization that provides students with endless opportunities for personal growth and community involvement.

Real Life has been a great experience. I had a really good intern/s. The kids were great to work with and are so fun to be around. It has been a great leadership and teaching experience.

One of the greatest places I have ever volunteered at was Real Life. The kids I worked with are some of the funniest, ambitious kids I have ever met. There are always happy and always willing to help out. Working with different cultures and backgrounds has been an eye opening experience as well. Getting to know the kids and where they have come from, only makes you value them that much more. I have gained such a greater appreciation for my life and it has humbled me in so many ways. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves kids and wants to get involved in the community.

I volunteer for Real Life at the Hser Ner Moo site. I love it! The staff and kids there are so nice and friendly and we do a lot of fun activities. I love how Real Life helps me meet new people my age and gives us a chance to get to know each other. I also love how Real Life has so many different sites and times that it's easy to find one that works for your schedule!

I really enjoy volunteering for Real life. I have made many new connections and have experienced so many new things. I learn something new everyday about the kids I volunteer with and the culture they have grown up with. Volunteering here has opened my eyes to things I have never noticed before while living in Utah. I love going every week and I always leave with at least one new memory I will always remember.

Reallife has been so much fun this year! Its a great way to connect with kids from different backgrounds. I have really enjoyed the time spent visiting with the kids in my group each week and would recommend this to anyone interested !!

I am a volunteer at the central park organization of real life. It has been a great experience for me so far! I serve on thursdays from 4-6 PM. The kids I serve are very bright and are often explaining things to me rather than me explaining things to them. I feel like the benefits that have come from serving have been far greater than what I have been able to offer. The kids there are very happy and always have me in a good mood. Real Life is more than some good kids though. It is well run and has fantastic leaders who involve themselves personally into the kids lives. Overall real life has made me a better person and has been a great opportunity for me to be a part of.

Real Life has changed my perspective in many ways. I have been able to build relationships with a diverse group of teens who I never would have been exposed to in any other way. I have learned so many things at Real Life. I never had worked with refugees before I started at Real Life. And didn't truly understand their situation. This has been a truly eye opening experience which has allowed me to better understand the life of a refugee in Utah. One of the best parts about Real Life is the personal relationships you can make with the teens that you work with. You really can see the difference you make in the lives of these teens, and the difference they make in your life. Real Life has brought me out of my comfort zone and helped me connect with others better. It is a fun, worthwhile service site that will allow you to truly appreciate the people you spend your time serving.

Real Life is truly amazing! Before I volunteered at Real Life I didn't even know there were refugees in Salt Lake City let alone that I could actually help them out. Throughout my time at Real Life I have connected with the teens and feel so rewarded to have helped them and watch them learn. If anyone is even the slightest bit interested in volunteering around Salt Lake I would definitely recommend joining Real Life, but don't be turned away by your first visit because it takes time to bond with the teens in a truly remarkable way.

I loved volunteering at Real Life. Tutoring the students and teaching them life lessons really makes me feel like I'm making a difference. Not only that, but I have learned so much from these kids, they all come from very different backgrounds and learning about them is making me a better person. I would highly recommend Real Life to any people looking for volunteer opportunities.

May 07, 2016
I love volunteering with real life! I've gotten to know all the students at my site really well and it's fun to go hang out with them every week. Everyone gets along great and it's easy to socialize and help with homework. it took some time for everyone to become friends, but as soon as we all did it made it so fun to go. I would highly recommend real life as a main service site!

May 08, 2016
Real Life has been an amazing opportunity. I have learned so much from working with these kids and look forward to going to my service site every week. I have improved my leadership skills and have gained so much through this program. I love being able to see the growth in each of these kids as I help them each week. I have made so many new friends as well. I would SO recommend volunteer at this site, it has been such a great experience.

Real Life is awesome. I love that every day I go to my site, I learn something new about myself, and the peers I work with. They are so incredibly motivated to achieve academically and it inspires me to work harder. They are witty and always make me laugh. The experiences I have had while with Real Life have been some of the most meaningful and I hope to stay involved long after my service hours are fulfilled.

Real life is just amazing. I love showing up twice a week with smiles on the kids faces happy to see me. I always know that I will be happy when I'm around them and we can all make each other laugh. We have all created bonds between the kids and I. Helping them understand their homework for the first hour and then doing a fun activity, whether it's hike, playing outside, playing games, learning something new or doing a art project. I love real life!

Real life is an amazing experience that I will never forget! I have loved going every week and seeing the students that I work with and watching them grow as a person over the school year. They never fail to make me smile and I will never forget the friendships I have made because of this opportunity to volunteer. I highly recommend getting involved with Real Life as much as you can! It is a great way to get involved within your community while having a great time.

Real Life was a great experience. If you want to do service where you are directly helping people then this is a great opportunity. I was able to connect with the kids that I was helping. If you love interacting with children and meeting new people then you should do Real Life! You get to help kids with homework and do fun activities with them. My favorite experience was when I was helping a girl with homework and she opened up to me and told me about the struggles that she was dealing with. Not only was I able to help her with homework but I was able to give her support in her home life. I gained really meaningful experiences through this.

I have really enjoyed Real Life. I volunteer at Granite Park Junior High and have fallen in LOVE with every single kid I've met. They are such amazing, funny, smart, talented kids with so much love in their hearts. Getting to know them and making so many new friends has been such a highlight for me. I would highly recommend Real Life as a main service site, it's changed my perspective on life and I'm so grateful for that.

May 14, 2016
Real life has been such an amazing experience. At the site I volunteered at not many kids came, but the ones that did come were truly amazing. I was able to get to know all of them so well and connected with many of them. The highlight of volunteering at Real Life is getting to know the kids and making new friends. The people that I volunteer with are super friendly and nice and have also made volunteering at Real life super enjoyable. Going to Real life has changed my perspective on many things and has changed me for the better! I would recommend this to anyone interested!

I volunteer at Granite Park and it has been an amazing experience for me this year. You meet so many people whether thats other high school kids or the students there. You make an amazing bond with them that is great for anyone.

May 21, 2016
I volunteer at the Scott School, and I have loved volunteering there. The kids that come consistently are so wonderful, and the lessons that we do get them all the students enganged which is awesome. I would recommend Real Life to anyone who is thinking of doing it because the people are so great!

May 23, 2016
I LOVE REAL LIFE! I have loved the opportunity to go each week and hang out with awesome kids! The best part is getting excited to go every week, and the kids being excited to see you! Definitely the best part of my week, I love those kids!

May 23, 2016
Real Life has been such an amazing volunteer experience! It creates so many one on one opportunities and really teaches you so much. It is so fun to see all the little faces every time you walk in and how happy they are to see you. While I have been volunteering at the Granite Education Center I have grown and learned so much from these little kids and while I have been teaching them so much, they have also taught me so many great life lessons and how to keep a positive happy attitude. I'm so grateful for the opportunity that real life has given me!

May 25, 2016
I absolutely loved volunteering at Real Life. The kids were great, the other volunteers were awesome and over all it was a great experience. I loved getting to know each child through the course of a year, and the friendships I have made with the mentors and other volunteers at Real Life are those I will keep for a long time.

Working with Real Life has completely changed my look on life. I look forward to going in every week and seeing all the kids. I am more open and out there because of Real Life. You are in an uncomfortable situation at first, but it ends up being one of the best decisions you make. Plus the kids love having a friend to talk to and get help from. I suggest Real Life to everyone because it is such a great experience that will give you so many amazing memories.

May 02, 2017
Real Life has provided me with so many benefits. The ability to see the kids you work with grow and learn is an incredible opportunity. However, I feel as though I learn more than the kids in this experience. Understanding where these kids have come from, and the challenges they have been through is truly inspiring. Volunteering at Real Life has been an incredible experience.

May 03, 2017
The connections I make with the kids when working with real life are incredible. It is very interesting to talk to the kids and learn from them about how they view certain situations. I have loved learning about their insights and watch them grow as students. I look forward to going to my site each week. I feel that I have made true connections with these kids which has made a major positive impact in my life and inspired me to continue to volunteer.

May 04, 2017
Real Life has been a fantastic experience. The kids there are so sweet and hardworking, and learning about them, their culture, and their activities has been incredible. Working with them and understanding them on a more personal level has made me more aware to the help that they need and the potential within that demographic.

May 08, 2017
I had the most amazing time doing real life this year! This kids we worked with are some of the greatest people I have ever met. I have learned so much from them, I'm sure much more than I've taught them. It was very challenging at times to get through to them because their English was so weak (most have only been here less than a year) and they are generally pretty shy. Getting to get to know them and see them come out of their shell is the best thing in the world. I love being able to see all of them in the halls and give them high five, knowing that this year I have been able to make friends and serve in a way that I would never have otherwise thought possible. I would highly recommend Real Life to anyone and everyone, even if your not in need of service hours. I promise that you won't regret it!

May 15, 2018
I had the best time this year volunteering with Real Life, I've met so many new people and I had so much fun doing community service projects, going on field trips, doing art projects and just playing games with all of the kids. It was such a great experience and I hope that I can do it again next year!!

My main service site was at Real Life South Salt Lake. I found my time here to be beneficial to me, and the teens I was serving. I connected with the kids here and formed great friendships. A lot of the kids I spent my time with were homeschooled or did online school, so the majority of their social interactions were through Real Life. We also had lessons, current events, service projects, field trips, games, and activities that kept us entertained and also helped us all learn new things. I would recommend Real Life to anyone who enjoys spending their time with peers or would like to improve their social skills.

Volunteering at Sunnyvale though Real Life has given me an opportunity I never thought I could have. Working with the teens at Sunnyvale has opened my eyes to how fortunate and how those less fortunate can provide so much happiness. It has been a blast helping and getting to know all of my new friends at Sunnyvale. The program is well run and well and you always have something to teach and play with those you are serving. I highly recommend volunteering at Real Life and if you get the chance, the Sunnyvale location.

I volunteered at Granite Park Junior High School on Mondays and Wednesdays and over time it made me realize how fulfilling volunteering can be. I slowly created relationships with the kids at the site and it became an amazing adventure with them every week! I am very glad I chose Real Life as one of my service sites because it really opened my eyes to the world of volunteering.
