ACCEPTING VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERS ONLY (last updated 9/23/20). Contact Lauren for more information. U-FIT is a special physical activity program for children with disabilities ages 3 through 18, their siblings, and their parents. Each semester approximately 140 children with a variety of disabilities participate on Friday nights and work 1:1 with university students in either swimming, dance, art, or physical activities in the gym. Parents can use this time as respite or can stay and socialize with other parents, take part in informational workshops, or exercise in a parent fitness program. The fitness classes provided include spin, zumba, and hip hop.
Volunteer responsibilities require working 1:1 with the participants and helping each child work on basic motor, sport, swimming, and social skills. U-FIT takes place on 7-8 Friday nights each academic semester (NOT summers) from 6-8 p.m. Volunteers must be 18 years old. A background check, training, and orientation are required. Volunteers should plan to commit to an entire semester.
I stayed with the same child for the whole semester and formed a bond with that child and family. It was very fun and rewarding to watch the kids learn new skills and advance in the goals we set for them at the beginning of the semester. - Shelly Thacker, Centerville, Utah
